On Wednesday 31st of January we are planning to see Spamalot, the new show from the writers of Monty Python. The show starts at 8pm and tickets should cost £15. If we get more than 12 people interested there may be a discount (£3 off I think) but we should book the tickets in advance. So if you would like to come along then send me an email with your name and mobile phone number or fill in the details on the sign-up sheet which will appear in the Foyer on the PsiStar notice board.
After much faffing about..... here they are! Last Year's photos! It's all brand new exciting upcoming stuff on here baby yeah! (There are some pics from this year in there too.) In the main gallery, there are pictures from the 2006 freshers fayre. Under 2005-2006 album, you can now see pictures of us down the pub, and pictures from the 2006 Summer Ball. Under the Challenge Pictures album, you can see pictures of the most recent Pumpkin Carving Challenge which includes 'behind-the-scenes' action at PsiStar HQ where all the scooping happened. Under Not quite PsiStar, you can see the Halloween party we held at PsiStar HQ.
Well not quite but the first Sunday of advent begins this weekend and today is the day you get to eat the chocolate behind door number 1. Speaking of Christmas, we still have two places available for our Christmas dinner, is no one interested in a three course meal for £8.95, you will also get a little goodie box on your table with party poppers and streamers! While we're on the subject, *_Michael Evans_*, you have not told us what you want to eat, please go to the sign up sheet and write down your order, the deadline is Wednesday! Also I need everyone's contact details for the meal so please send me your email and/or phone number, I have no way to contact 6 of you, I will name you if you don't write back just like Michael... :-P
And now for something completely different. This week PsiStar will be Ice Skating at Canary Wharf. For some of you who know the area and are thinking; "there's no Ice rink at Canary Wharf" you would be right, except that they put up a temporary one every winter. So meet in the physics foyer at 2pm (we leave at 2.20pm) and bring a travel card valid for zone 2, oh yeah the cost for this little excursion is £10 including skate hire, but we don't want to give you that. Lets say £7.50 for PsiStar members, but makes us look cheap, so this is what we will do, if you are a PsiStar member we will give you £5, that means you only pay £5 in total. Remember, all first year physicists are members. If you are not a member but you would like to come skating with us, here is a tip: Join up at the info point for £5 and you will get your money back by skating with us on Wednesday, and you can get £10 off of your meal if you come to the PsiStar Christmas dinner! Thats amazing!!
Summary:
* join PsiStar * meet 2pm in physics foyer on Wednesday 6th and come skating with us. * Michael Evans, tell us what you want to eat at the Christmas meal * Send me your email address if your name is down on the Christmas dinner sign up sheet.
PsiStar wish to invite you all to our first Seminar of the year by our very own Dr. Bob Jones, entitled 'Some Hard Questions is Soft Condensed Matter'. The talk won't be too technical and will start at 2.30pm in UG1 on Wednesday 22nd, so aim to be there for 2pm so that you don't miss out on the free food (free if you are a PsiStar member or £1 if you are not, all 1st year Physicists are members). This is a great opportunity to learn about something that you won't get in your degree. We will aim to get some more seminars for you in the near future and we are open to suggestions so if you have a title or topic you would like to hear about or can nominate a speaker please let us know. I hope to see you all there on Wednesday!
Here's a short description of the seminar
quote:
Soft Condensed Matter has been one of the most rapidly growing areas of physics over the last two decades. Some of the reasons for this are that (1) it is interdisciplinary, opening up links between physics and biology and enhancing the role of physics in technological applications that used to be associated solely with chemistry, (2) it operates largely at the micro- and nano-scales and (3) it takes traditional physics experimental techniques (laser light scattering, optical microscopy) into totally new areas of phenomena. At the same time it raises some interesting basic questions about the relative roles of energy and entropy in determining the macroscopic behavior of many systems. I will try to introduce all of these aspects in a simple way to show you how what began as an offshoot of traditional solid state and liquid physics has been transformed into a totally new view of much of the world that surrounds us at the macroscopic level.

Today at 2:30 there is a meeting in UG1 to discuss what we what to do in the society and how to improve what we're doing already. If you have any suggestion, please come along and tell us. After all, we're YOUR society.
Its the most amazing, fantastical, funtabulous time of the year and its coming to a town near you.
PsiStar are organizing a festive day of entertainment, party's and food for Christmas. On Saturday 9th of December we have a table booked at Fat Cats cafe and restaurant in Bow Wharf at 7.30pm. If you would like to come and you are a Psistar member (or close friend) then we will subsidize your meal, so you get 3 courses for £8.95 or 2 for £5.95, what a bargain! There is a sign up sheet in the physics foyer so sign up soon by putting your name and order down, there is only room for 20 people. You can perouse the menu here.
After the meal its time to party at PsiStar HQ where there will be music, mulled wine and Jaffa cakes (always Jaffa cakes).
In addition to all of this we have devised a secret plan to give everyone a present for Christmas. If you are going to the meal then bring along a small gift that costs approximately £3 and we will draw names from a hat to decide who gets it, that way everyone will have a gift this Christmas.

There may be a movie before hand, for more details check out our dedicated page.
This weeks event is taking place on All Saints (souls) day, November 1st, hence the whole Hallowe'en malarkey. Meet us as normal in the Physics foyer at 2pm and bring student cards and money for the London Dungeon (closest station is London Bridge). The dungeon is in zone 1 so make sure that you have a valid travel card, and the entry price (so I have been told) should be around £8 with a student card and all PsiStar members will get a free pint after! Non-members are welcome and encouraged to come along but you won't receive your free drink.
There are no Dragons...
Last week's pumpkin spanking and movie was a great success, the pumpkin designs were all very original, special mentions go out to Leo Kreozis our youngest pumpkinator, Phil for his 'Pumkin Pie' and Sabriya for the best overall pumpkin.
See you there!
Steve 'I am suppose to mention Fletch in every email even though he never turns up to Psistar events' Hudziak
Yes its true PsiStar are going horror mad in preparation for Halloween, next week we will have another spanking challenge, its the annual PsiStar pumpkin competition. We have acquired 15 shiny orange 'kins for you to mold and cut into your own hideous designs which will then be impartially judged and the winner awarded a scary 'trick or treat prize'. Just come along on Wednesday 25th of October to the Physics common room (through the second floor lab) at 2pm and get carving. Please come early to avoid disappointment, or bring along a fruit/veg of your choice to carve for yourself. Its defiantly going to be a fun day and if you don't believe me then check out the pictures from last year for yourself...
When we have finished making a huge mess its time for bootleg cinema, this week something not for the faint hearted because it will be a scary film yet to be named. Last week the planned movie was canceled at the last minute because you guys had 'work to do' due the next day, so maybe you can free up your Wednesday next week. Apologies to Stefan Schmitz who ended up in LG1 on time for the film but found himself all alone. More information will be sent next week in a reminder email.
See you next week!
Steve 'Oh yeah, congratulations to me for winning this weeks coconut challenge' Hudziak
This coming Wednesday (18th) we have two (2) exciting events on our agenda's.
First up its our very first Kallange (pronounced Challenge) from our new kallenge master (or Spanker), Fletch 'Dave' Fletcher. the kallenge is: 'Where did the Coconuts Come From?'
Lets go over the rules: Fletch will supply us with paper (for aeroplanes), walnuts, string and selotape. The idea being to transport your Walnut further than anyone else and win a prize. The use of other sticky 'substances' other than selotape will be allowed with Fletch's approval and must be 'supplied' by you. Further rules may apply on the day...
To attend this Kallenge just turn up in the Physics museum on the first floor at 2pm.
After the 'mess' has been cleaned up it will then be time for some good old fashioned British humour in the "PsiStar Bootleg Cinema". Yes thats right, we're watching Monty python and the holy Grail in LG1 (lecture room in the Physics Basement), bring snacks drinks etc.
See you on Wednesday,
Steve 'They gave me a new LCD monitor for my office... Yay!' Hudziak
