For those that went to the Halloween party this year at Isabelle's house which had a large contingent of PsiStar there, the picture's, coustey of Pratik, are up on the the website in the "Pictures" section.
Haha, at the recent Neuxs AGM, PsiStar was awarded the prize for best website, not that I'm going to gloat all that much, but.....
YYYEEEESSSSSSS!!!
Have to admit myself and Jo have spent a lot of time and effort getting psistar.co.uk up and running again and I'm very glad Nexus have seen this and appreciated it.
It also nabs PsiStar a cool £100 which I'm sure Nicola will find a use for.
Other winners on the day;
Astro2, Maynooth's Physics and Astronomy Society from Ireland won best society, quite deserved from the looks of their site and society events.
Imperial won the prize for best newsletter, congrates goes out to them, haven't read a copy but if they'd like to send one this way I'd be very happy, (hint, hint).
And I *think* QSoc from Sussex won most improved but don't quote me on that.
I'd also like to say hi to Dublin University Physics Society who have popped by into our forums to congratulate us on our outstanding website... Cheers guys, we like yours too.
On Monday next, 7 November, Professor Marc Hillmyer will be speaking on "Functional nanoporous materials from reactive block copolymers".
Professor Hillmyer is on sabbatical leave at Cambridge from the Chemistry Department of the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. His research efforts are focussed on the design, synthesis, and characterization of polymers. In addition to the development of precise macromolecular structure-property relationships, his group strives to discover new and technologically important applications of the polymeric materials prepared in our laboratories. A central theme of our research is the utilization of contemporary techniques for novel material synthesis. These include controlled polymerization methods, selective and mild polymer modification protocols, and advanced polymerization catalysis.
The lectures are held at 14.15 in room 112 Physics. Those that won't be going home for reading week this might be a very good reason to get out of bed at mid-day.
Well to save myself no end of time in the coming months I've finally finished the installation of a new gallery for all the picture's that myself and many others have collected over the course of the past couple of years.
If you click on the pictures link in the blue bar it should take you there, if it doesn't look all fancy and new make sure you press F5 on your keyboard to refresh the contents of your broswers cache and load in the new menu.
This week lets do something a bit more science based and what could be more science based than a trip to the science museum? Probably nothing which is why we will be going there. Meet in the physics foyer as usual but try and be there BEFORE 2.30pm as the museum does close at 6pm (18.00). We will make our way via mile end station, tube tickets will be about £4.60 for a 1-2 travel card or zone 1 return and about £4 for oyster users. The museum itself is free to enter but there is a special Alien exhibition which is of interest to several PsiStar members, here is a quote from the Science museum website:
'Follow us on a journey through the real science of alien life and into the furthest reaches of your imagination. Get up-close and personal with some classic science fiction films and props, then come face-to-face with the weird creatures that inhabit Earth, before exploring far-flung planets and stars. Enter the "Alien Worlds" of leading scientists and meet the aliens they have imagined in a unique hands-on environment. And before you leave, compose your own personal message to an alien.'
Sounds good to me, tickets for this exhibit cost £6.25 for students so bring your student cards. As usual anyone is welcome to join us, don't forget that any 1st year physicists have free membership so don't miss out.
Well I've been busy this weekend setting up a gallery of pictures and a setting up a few scripts so that in the future I don't have to make all the bloody gallery pages which involves a hell of a lot of time.
It's still not fully customised yet, I've got the header all sorted (after a few hours wanting to kick the living sh**....umph, should stop there), I won't be adding an offical link to it until I'm happy with it but you can go see the progress and the pictures myself and Jo have uploaded, here, enjoy.
The film featuring in this week's bootleg cinema has been decided by our resident film buff Evrim. Those of you familiar with our ever happy turkish friend will know of his astounding knowledge and impeccable taste in horror films,so be sure of a good 'un. I am also hoping to amaze you with my cooking skills, all those pumpkin innards have got to go somewhere and i was thinking of integrating them with our own innards. Pie n films mmmm.
